In the mid Ming Dynasty, the constables Zhang Sheng and Yuan Su of the Jingji yamen were at odds with each other for being expelled from the yamen after their colleague Cheng Yun killed a prisoner. Later Cheng Yun was killed, shrouded in mist, with evidence pointing to warden Ge Lin and mysterious wealthy Jia Shenkang.
